The set $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers is defined by $$\mathbb{C} = \left\{ a+bi \colon a,b \in \mathbb{R}\},$$ where $i=\sqrt{-1}$ is the imaginary number and $\mathbb{R}$ is the set of real numbers.
