The ceiling function $\lceil \cdot \rceil \colon \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{Z}$ is defined by $$\lceil x \rceil = \min \{ y \in \mathbb{Z} \colon y \geq x \},$$ i.e. the smallest integer greater than or equal to $x$.
