Template:BookReference

This template is to be used to provide a reference to an entry in the Books page.

This page documents how to use this template, both technically and stylistically.

Basic Functionality

In its most basic form, the template may be used as follows:

• {{BookReference|Name of book|Year/Date of publication|Author}}
• {{BookReference|Name of book|Year/Date of publication|Author 1|author2 = Author 2}}
• {{BookReference|Name of book|Year/Date of publication|Author 1|author2 = Author 2|author3 = Author 3}}
• {{BookReference|Name of book|Year/Date of publication|Author 1|author2 = Author 2|author3 = Author 3|author4 = Author 4}}
• {{BookReference|Name of book|Year/Date of publication|Author 1|author2 = Author 2|author3 = Author 3|author4 = Author 4|author5 = Author 5}}
• {{BookReference|Name of book|Year/Date of publication|Author 1|author2 = Author 2|author3 = Author 3|author4 = Author 4|author5 = Author 5|author6 = Author 6}}

where each of the Author fields is to be filled with the author name, as specified in the work under consideration.

(NOTE: It does not matter whether or not an author is already named differently on Mathematicians; see "Possible Issues" below.)

How to Use

This template is invoked almost exclusively in the Sources section. A representative instance, taken from Definition:Set Union, is:

Thus, in steps:

• Precede the template with an asterisk, *, and a space
• Use prev and next fields, if desired (see "Features" below)
• A colon, :, and a space
• The section of the book the reference applies to (optionally with section name, if applicable)
• The number of the definition/theorem, if applicable

Features

To document and emulate the linear flow of reading that characterizes a book, the entries prev and next are used, as in:

{{BookReference|Introduction to Abstract Algebra|1969|C.R.J. Clapham|prev = Characteristic of Subfield of Complex Numbers is Zero|next = Characteristic of Finite Ring is Non-Zero}}

which is used on Characteristic times Ring Element is Ring Zero and renders as:

1969: C.R.J. Clapham: Introduction to Abstract Algebra ... (previous) ... (next)

As the names suggest, the following are the intended values for prev and next:

• The prev field holds the title of the Template:ProofWiki page that is concerned with the information preceding the particular entry in the source work.
• The next field holds the title of the Template:ProofWiki page that is concerned with the information following the particular entry in the source work.

Thus:

prev = Characteristic of Subfield of Complex Numbers is Zero

above indicates that in Introduction to Abstract Algebra, the result Characteristic of Subfield of Complex Numbers is Zero is followed by the result Characteristic times Ring Element is Ring Zero.

Similarly, the part:

next = Characteristic of Finite Ring is Non-Zero

indicates that in said source, Characteristic times Ring Element is Ring Zero is followed by Characteristic of Finite Ring is Non-Zero.

As usual, these options have to be separated from the others by using the pipe character |.

Possible Issues

Of course, before resorting to the solutions provided below, please verify that no spelling errors have been made while trying to invoke the template.

One or more of the authors turns up in red

If the name of one or more of the authors shows in red, this means said author does not have a page on Mathematician:Mathematicians under the name that appears on the book.

It could happen that this author does actually have a page under another name (usually by juggled initials and/or first names).

In this simple case, all that needs to be done is to create a redirect from the non-existent rendering of the name to the one that actually is already covered.

Should the author be completely absent from Template:ProofWiki as of yet, then please create a page according to Help:Editing/Creating Pages for Mathematicians contact one of the administrators.

The book turns up in red
